  • Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway (4 Miles) 
    Britain's highest adhesion railway, reaching 1498 feet above sea level. Originally built in 1900 by the Caledonian Railway Company for transporting refined lead to the central belt of Scotland, it now offers the chance to take a scenic train ride between Leadhills and Wanlockhead.

    Leadhills Library is Britain's oldest subscription library, and is open to the public between May and September (various afternoons).

    Guide to walking the Southern Upland Way, which passes through Wanlockhead.
  • New Lanark (20 miles)
    Visit the world renowned New Lanark Conservation village. Home to Owen's groundbreaking social reforms in the 1800's; the village now offers the chance to go back in history. Visitors can also take a walk along side the breathtaking Falls of Clyde.
  • Crawfordjohn Heritage Venture (6 miles) 
    Crawfordjohn Heritage Venture is a museum dedicated to life in the Southern Uplands of South Lanarkshire. The museum has displays on life on a hill farm, displays on sheep farming, and on rural community life. The Museum is located in the former Crawfordjohn Church, an 18th century listed building. Well worth a visit!
  • Biggar Puppet Theatre (14 miles) 
    Biggar Puppet Theatre is home to the internationally renowned Purves Puppets. Featuring large-scale puppets worked under Black Light techniques. The puppets glow with jewel-like colours, while the puppeteers dressed in black disappear like magic. Fun for all of the family.
